Writing

Great Writers From Harlem is a key part of Harlem's history that needs to be unpacked and discovered. Some of the greatest writers were born, worked, or lived in Harlem and produced some of the greatest writing today. Students will utilize our online digital downloadable lessons to learn about Langston Hughes, Richard Wright, Julia de Burgos, Maya Angelou, Ernesto Quiñonez, ora Neale Hurston, James Weldon Johnson, Ralph Ellison, Countee Cullen, Claude McKay, and Piri Thomas.   These Reading Comprehension Passages are designed to be used as an e-learning activity and completed by the student in the comfort of their own homes.

Each virtual reading lesson is common core certified and covers all the key information students need to know about the person in question and presents it in a fun and engaging way that resonated with students of all ages and grease levels. Lessons are available for K-12th grades and are designed to increase in complexity and depth of research as you go. With a simple online format, these lessons are specifically designed to make home-based learning fun  and memorable. Here at Harlem Roots, we believe in making history come to life for students, and when it comes to the history of a place so rich and vibrant as Harlem, nothing but the best in innovative online learning will work. That is what makes our virtual learning program different than anything else you may find online today!
